Can AI Up Scaling Improve The Images On Smart TV?

Posted by tanjnipache on July 14th, 2021

TV technologies have been changing and advancing every minute we talk about it. 4K Ultra HD TVs have already taken the market by storm. It is only a matter of time before 8K TVs are introduced to the customer.

But in this race of TV resolution, we still do not have extensive TV or even internet content to stream in 4K. While most big production houses like Netflix and Amazon quickly upgrade to 4K, they will fall behind again with 8K. The result will be that many of us will have to watch 2K content on our fancy TVs.

It becomes meaningless in this scenario to upgrade from the trusty 2k android TV in your living room. The answer to this problem may lie in artificial intelligence used picture enhancement.

What do we mean by Upscaling?

Simply put, upscaling means expanding a lower resolution of an image to fit a bigger screen or display. Images of lower resolution are repeated to cover the more significant number of pixels on a higher resolution screen. After the screen is covered, there are filters added to even out the rough edges.

How is AI Upscaling Different?

The problem with basic upscaling is that while the lower resolution image fits the screen, the stretching makes the display blurred and less vibrant. There is a loss in image quality.

AI upscaling works slightly differently. Instead of stretching the image, in this method, a deep learning algorithm first looks at and processes the low-resolution image. It then predicts what the high-resolution version could look like. Ultimately it produces a much sharper and detailed image without losing any quality. If your TV is 2k Android, AI can take a 720 x 480-pixel motion picture and make it fit without making it look blurry.

Tools for AI Enhancing

With the use of this type of AI, intelligent TVs can deliver the quality of image they have been designed for it. Here are some of the methods other than upscaling that make enhancements possible.

  • Denoising
  • Deinterlacing
  • Restoration

Leading Contenders in the AI Enhancement Market

Artificial intelligence has been extensively used in smart technologies, whether advertised as such or not. The foremost contender in the market for using AI in motion picture enhancement is perhaps Samsung. Based on machine learning, the Samsung AI analyses a massive amount of video content which helps create suitable filters. These filters are specific to the content – a filter for bird watching will be very different from a filter for tiger movement. However, their algorithms seem to be more reliant on deep learning rather than machine learning.

Conclusion

Artificial intelligence has reached a point where its presence seems ubiquitous. Google Assistant & AI Enhancement all aid the development of technology. We can only look forward to what else is there to come.
