Steps to Preserve the Safety of Your Knives by Sharpening It

There is a saying among knife collectors that a shaped knife is a safe knife. Indeed it is something everyone familiar with using them daily acknowledges.

Whether you are hunting, cooking, camping, fishing regularly, in a dire survival situation where your life depends on the sharpness of the blades, a well-honed blade can turn out to be the most needed lifeline for you.

No matter what the task is, you need to sharpen your knives to achieve a certain degree of accuracy and efficiency. So, now and then, you should sharpen the edge of the knife before you start your day in the wilderness.

The Path To Sharpening The Blades Of Knives:

Whether you need to tune up the edge of the blade or go full-throttle on this, it takes a little more time and an investment of patience and knowledge, and skills to get it back to straight-razor quality. With the steps mentioned below, you can achieve it without fail.

?       Start with choosing the right whetstone:

The trick to finding the right whetstone depends on the severity of damage on the blade. The more severely damaged your knife is, the more coarse the whetstone you will want to have.

If the blade’s edge has burrs or is straight out dull, you will want to have whetstone with 220 grit. However, if the blade is somewhat dull and you can make do with it, you will need medium whetstone with 600 grit.

Moreover, if the blade just needs a bit of toning, you need to go for soft whetstone with 1,000 or more grit.

?       The procedure starts with wetting your stone:

You have to spread either light oil or water across the whetstone. Let it sit on the stone for quite some time to penetrate the porous surface of the time.

The lubrication of the whetstone will increase the happening tendencies of the surface while smoothing the blade\'s travel. It is done so to reduce the damage.

?       The angle of placement is important as well.

Lay the blade of the venom knife or any knife for that matter, flat on the whetstone. Then you have to keep slowly raising it until you can sense the blade to meet the edge\'s natural angle. Normally, it comes with an edge of around 20°-30°.

?       Start the procedure of sharpening:

You have to start at one end of the whetstone, ensuring that the blade is placed at the correct angle and facing away from you. You have to push the blade away from you continuously. As the blade of the knife travels down the stone, you will have to pull the blade across the stone again while maintaining the angle as well as giving it light pressure. Keep in mind to adjust the lateral angle of the knife. Repeat this process at least six times for attaining sharpness.

Ending note:

The key to sharpening the blade of any knife lies in keeping it up. Taking the blades away and then pulling them towards you maintaining an angle will help you retain the sharpness you seek. Test out the acquired sharpness and repeat the methodology until the desired effect is achieved.
