Though there has been a lot of interest in developing and validating biomarkers, toxicology of the central nervous system has gotten a lot less attention, especially when it comes to biomarkers of effects and susceptibility. This chapter discusses some general aspects of CNS biomarkers in relation to neurotoxicant exposure and neurodegenerative diseases, and uses the development and use of biomarkers of exposure, susceptibility, and health effects for a well-known class of neurotoxic chemicals, organophosphorus insecticides.

Biomarkers are used to assess the biological status, the existence of diseases, and the treatment effects. Over the last decade, advances in genomics and proteomics have increased awareness of genetic regulatory networks connected to central nervous system biomarkers. Through a comparison of normal and sick tissues, proteomics technologies have evolved in several fields of drug discovery and development.
