Why you shouldn?t try to clean your fabulous exotic handmade rug yourself

If you have one of those fabulous exotic rugs that means a lot to you and is very much part of your home, a word of advice – The very worst thing you can do is try to clean that rug yourself.

To explain:

Rugs aren’t carpets – They are constructed differently, made of different types of materials to modern carpets, and have a totally different structure.

Modern cleaning fluids and appliances are designed to clean carpets, not exotic handmade rugs – The cleaning fluids are too powerful, and the appliances can actually damage the weave.

Pretty straightforward, you’d think, but the cleaning issue gets more complex. Handmade rugs incorporate a very different weave structure:

The heavy weave in a rug is designed to act as a solid base. This means that the weave is usually very dense and very tightly woven. In this sort of weave, materials accumulate and are extremely hard to remove.

Most exotic handmade rugs are made of organic materials of one kind or another. These materials, naturally, are chemically reactive. If you have an area of discoloration on your rug, it means that some sort of chemical action is already in process.

You can see why hitting one of these rugs with a barrage of chemicals, vacuum cleaners, and other modern cleaning options simply won’t work:

The chemicals are designed to clean synthetic materials, not natural fibers.

The vacuum cleaner is designed to remove materials from carpets which have a completely different weave structure.

The most likely scenario is that any type of cleaning other than professional cleaning will simply damage the rug.

Moisture from cleaning may also damage the rug, and cause it to deteriorate faster if the rug isn’t properly dried.

There’s a rug cleaning company in Los Angeles called Holland Rug Care which is a great place to get your handmade rug cleaned, and see how the professionals solve all these problems. They do pH tests, colorfastness tests, full immersion cleaning and regularly do difficult jobs like wool rug cleaning.
