Is Cosmetic Dentistry Right for You?

There's something about a beautiful smile that can light up a person's face and light up the whole room. A smile is often the first thing people notice about you and is always a great ice breaker. For most people, a smile is something taken for granted and something to be enjoyed without a second thought. Unfortunately for others, a smile is something to be avoided due to embarrassing or unsightly dental problems. Not having a beautiful smile can have a devastating effect on a person's self-confidence and quality of life. The good news is there are plenty of things that can be done to help restore that self-confidence, improve quality of life and create a smile to be proud of. Today's cosmetic dentistry options are almost entirely pain-free and are often more affordable than you would think. Even if you don't have dental insurance, many dentists provide a variety of financing options to help you get the dental care you need. If you have crooked, discolored or unevenly spaced teeth, one of the following options might be right for you:

*  Porcelain laminates. Also known as veneers, porcelain laminates are custom made to cover the front surface of your teeth. Laminates are ideal for teeth that have dark stains, an uneven surface, are chipped or that appear too large or small. Because less of the tooth needs to be removed, laminates are an ideal alternative to crowns.

*  Crowns. Crowns can be made with porcelain, metal or are metal free and are sometimes referred to as a dental cap. If your teeth are worn down, have cracked enamel or lost fillings, or if you have an improper bite, grind your teeth or have had root canals, your dentist may recommend a crown. Crowns are often used to help improve both the appearance and function of damaged teeth and can also serve to help protect teeth from further damage.

*  Implants. Dental implants are an effective solution for replacing missing teeth. However, because dental implants are surgically positioned into the jawbone underneath your gums, you must have healthy gums and have enough bone in your jaw to anchor the implants to. Implants are extremely secure and won't shift or slip while eating or talking.

*  Bonding.
If you have teeth that are cracked, chipped, misarranged or discolored, bonding might be right for you. Bonding involves a tooth-colored composite resin being applied layer by layer to your teeth to cover small irregularities or fill in spaces. Bonding can often be done in a single office visit.

*  Teeth whitening. In-office and at-home whitening treatments are available for anyone over the age of 16 who wants to have whiter teeth. The in-office treatment only takes 45 minutes and can make teeth several shades whiter.

*  Smile makeover. A smile makeover can be an ideal option if you have crooked, discolored, chipped, worn or unevenly spaced teeth. The specialists at Park Slope Dentistry offer this service which starts with a private consultation to determine the best approach for creating the beautiful smile you've always wanted.

*  Invisalign. Invisalign is the perfect alternative to traditional braces. Invisalign is a custom made, clear dental device comprised of aligners. These aligners are removable, pain-free and allow you to enjoy your favorite foods without worrying. You can remove your aligners to eat, and to brush and floss which makes maintaining good oral hygiene a snap. Your dentist will determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign.
