It's a very understated brand. However, Mido is part of the Swatch Group, but has long been sidelined. But that was before. Because since the beginning of the year, between the Ocean Star Decompression Worltimer and the Multifort TV Big Date which interests us today, a whole new era is emerging for the house of Le Locle!

The return of the TV box

If we confine ourselves to its design, one might think that this watch from the Multifort collection is at the crossroads between a Patek Philippe Aquanaut and a Glashütte Original Seventies Panorama Date. However, if this timepiece has recognizable looks, it also has a real legacy at Mido replica. Inspired by the rectangular design of the first televisions, the TV box was created in 1973, then was revisited in 1980 and 2000 by the designers of the brand. This year and to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, Mido is bringing this shaped case back from the archives to bring it up to date with a DNA that is as strong as it is surprising in comparison with the rest of the Mido catalogue. Its particularity: a square bezel with a brushed finish, a two-level back giving depth to the trapezoidal indexes, a large date at noon, as well as a sandblasted marker on the bezel. Everything is "Swiss made" and powered by a Caliber 80 with a Nivachron hairspring.

The strong points

It is undeniable, but its design is masterful. From a distance, it looks like a 5968A with its orange rubber strap. But up close, we can't be mistaken, we understand that we are dealing with a completely different creature. This is also what we like, namely a unique design that does not try to take itself for another. Then, even if smaller diameters are in vogue, we appreciate its dimensions: 40mm wide for 11.5mm thick, which is even more surprising when you put it on the wrist. Add to that a lug-to-lug length limited to 46.8mm and you get a rather discreet fake watch uk that is very pleasant to wear (thanks to the rubber). The second surprise is on the side of the dial with its multi-layered background where the indexes merge and where the shade of gray underlined by horizontal brushing stands out. What we regret

It is impossible not to appreciate rubber for the flexibility and comfort it offers. But for once, we like less the double flash pumps which make the (re)installation of the bracelet difficult. For once, we would have preferred a simple quick pump or even traditional pumps. And when you see the butterfly folding clasp on the steel bracelets, you think you would have liked to see this same vein on rubber rather than a pin buckle, even if it is rather well executed. It's a matter of taste, of course, but it would have added a noticeable touch of charm. Then, even if we appreciate the presence of a caliber offering 80 hours of power reserve, its lack of decoration contrasts with all the work carried out on the case. Given the price, we do not quibble, but we can still afford to be a perfectionist.

Our opinion on this Mido watch

However, since the start of the year and with two collections with a strong style, the Swiss brand has surprised us. We are the first surprised to see ourselves literally loving these novelties. This builds respect for the work done by the brand's teams, even if it's a long way to make it as sexy as its new products.
