Anti-Virus Software; The Pro's, The Con's and the Solution

Anti-Virus software is definitely a double-edged sword. Some applications that you install to protect your PC end up acting just like the viruses that you?re trying to avoid. These applications can slow down your system to a grinding halt and require you to walk away from your computer for hours at a time because they need a chance to run. Not only that, some of these services also expect you to pay expensive subscription fees that hit the pocket book; let?s face it, there are other places your money might be better well spent.

So how do you protect yourself without having to pay expensive fees and avoid having to run daily scans? For years, I left my computers entirely un-protected. At my wit?s end with the software packages that were made available, I gave them up, entirely. Through that I was almost entirely able to avoid any and all viruses. I say almost because a colleague of mine forwarded me an email asking me what the attachment was?you guessed it, a virus! No matter, a free online scan with Bit Defender cleared that problem right up.

Then, I started consulting part-time. One question I received more often then not was in regards to what anti-virus software I use on my computers. I?d tell them that I don?t use any anti-virus software and that (for liability reasons) I couldn?t recommend the same for them. Now, I can thankfully say that answer has changed.

Anti-Virus Gold (AVG) with scheduled scans disabled is my new form of protection. It stays out of the way, checks for viruses, spyware, monitors incoming email, and keeps virus definition up-to-date for no cost. If you?re tired of all the con?s of Anti-Virus software, AVG might also be the solution for you.
