A Brief List about Microwave Oven Safety Tips for You

Posted by Samstores on February 14th, 2017

The microwave oven may be a handy and versatile kitchen appliance that can do a lot of things from reheating to actual cooking. However, some people forget that it can be a potentially harmful device. Like most electronic devices, microwave ovens require careful and proper usage that must be followed to prevent them from malfunctioning or causing danger to your home and health. Here is a list of microwave oven safety tips for you:

•    Make sure it is approved and regulated by the FDA - The US Food and Drug Administration regulates microwave ovens. In fact, reputable manufacturers of these appliances must certify that the products can meet the standards in performance and safety being enforced by the FDA.

•    Read the manual – User manuals are typically ignored, but reading or at least scanning the one that comes with your microwave oven is highly recommended as a safety precaution. Some manufacturers may have special requirements, information, or tips you should be aware of when using their product, especially regarding electric outlets. The manual should help you understand and learn more how your microwave works. For all you know, there could be special features waiting to be discovered that can make your cooking easier and faster, too.

•    Basic safety precautions – Injuries and accidents related to microwave ovens are caused by careless handling of the vessel or using the wrong container. To avoid them, make sure that you use only microwave-safe containers or heating and cooking vessels, and never handle them with your bare hands once it is time to take them out of the microwave. Use a potholder or oven mitts when handling hot containers.

Another thing to remember is to avoid microwaving aluminum foils (they can catch fire), plastic bags (they can melt), and eggs with their shells still on and containers with their lid (they can explode). Remember to remove metal forks and utensils from the food or container as they can spark in the microwave. Be cautious when boiling water in the microwave oven, since it can explode and scald you. To avoid that, heat only a minimum amount of water and do not boil it for too long. You can place a wooden spoon in the water while it is being heated, too.
