The Exceptional Benefits of Shopping Locally in Colorado

Take a Walk Down Town. . .

Since the Internet allows people all over the world to make purchases conveniently from home, they’re leaving their homes and offices less and less to buy goods from local businesses and small companies, which is unfortunate, because it means that we’re losing that personal human touch more and more each day. If the residents of cities and towns don’t support local businesses, these merchants will inevitably go out of business, which will hurt the general community in more ways than one. For example, not only does the owner suffer, but so does his or her laid-off employees, who then have to seek relief from government agencies. The overall community also suffers from a lack of variety in the bricks-and-mortar marketplace. It also creates a sense of isolation, which can cause other problems on a personal level as well as a familial level.

. . . And Love Thy Neighbor

On the positive side, when we do support local merchants, the community thrives from support, solidarity and even friendship. On an economic level, this also creates more jobs, which allows for more spending, which stimulates the local economy. It also generates more sales-tax, which allows municipalities to thrive financially, something that is eventually passed on to all residents in a variety of beneficial ways. Supporting local artists and craftsmen is also important, not just because they need to earn a living just like everyone else but because every community needs an element of creativity, otherwise life can seem empty and lifeless. Another valuable resource that business owners would be wise to take advantage of is joining the local chamber of commerce to support their own business, their employees and other local businesses .

Give Some Back

Another great way to build community is to support public charities by volunteering your time or by making a donation of goods or services or money. This also stimulates the local economy and creates jobs and generates more revenue via sales-tax. When people get laid-off, they often turn to nonprofit organizations for support, which is great, because that’s one of the reasons public charities exist. However, it can be a Catch 22situation, since most nonprofit organizations get anywhere from 75% to 80% of their funding from individual donors, and if the unemployment rate soars in a particular city or town, then that could cause a big decrease in donations from individual donors. So, whether you’re selling books or clothing or ice-cream or counseling or bicycles or theater tickets or modern furniture, and you live in Boulder, Denver or other front range Colorado communities, consider making at least a small monetary contribution or make a donation of merchandise or free services instead, because those things have a monetary value. If you do this, then you’ll be enriching your community and indirectly rewarding yourself.
