Dining with Bamboo

Did you know that certain types of bamboo plants can grow as tallas three feet over the course of only one full day? If we take the math a little farther, this translates into one inch every forty minutes! This amazing feat is achieved due to bamboo’s unusual rhizome-dependent system, and it has one of the quickest rates of growth in the world, making it the largest member of the grass family. As a diverse raw material, it has been used to construct furniture, flooring, buildings, and it’s even been consumed as a source of food. Bamboo has a higher compressive strength than brick or wood and a tensile strength that competes with steel. All in all it is truly one of the most remarkable natural and renewable resources on the planet .

As far as furniture goes, the texture and the grain of bamboo as an eco-friendly product  is a marvel to behold. It’s naturally beautiful, with a hard, shiny surface that has no need for stains or polyurethanes. It’s an ideal choice for furniture, whether it ends up in a bedroom, a kitchen, a dining-room, a living-room or an office. And a great way to add an extra trace of beauty to a desk, a nightstand or a coffee table is to get a cute, curly bamboo plant.

The nice thing about modern bedroom furniture is that when you purchase all matching pieces (bedframe, dresser, and nightstands) it literally transforms the whole room by adding a sense of richness where color is concerned and a sense of depth where dimension is concerned. In the case of bamboo, you also gain the added benefit of bringing an exotic atmosphere to your bedroom as well as an appreciation for cultural expansion, since bamboo is indigenous to Asia. For many people, the bedroom is the room where they spend most of their time, so surrounding yourself with objects that please you and inspire you increases your sense of wellbeing and allows the bedroom to be experienced as a haven of relaxation and regeneration.

From the point of view of sustainability, bamboo has been utilized for many centuries not just for its strength and flexibility but also because of its strong renewable character. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, which historically is a recent development or phenomenon, wood has become scarce, and this is because it takes several decades for most trees to reach full maturity. In some cases, it can take a century for a tree to become fully grown, and the tree that replaces it takes the same amount of time to grow up. The bamboo plants that grow to be as thick and tall as the average tree can grow to full maturity in sixty days, which is truly amazing when you think about it. Hence, its contribution to sustainability, which is a very valuable commodity these days. The running bamboo species in particular grows like a weed on speed because it produces several shoots at a time.
