To get into ESL teaching programmes (i.e. teaching English as a second language) the first and foremost step is to earn a Bachelor's Degree, although a master's degree is always highly valued in all the schools and institutions. Any prospective school teacher or an adult ESL professional must take a course in the linguistics and its theories of second language acquisition. Teachers in ESL are not required to be very fluent in the second language that they opt. Most of the teacher education programs usually require some amount for work experience/internship as a part of student teaching.
