Symptoms of kiwi allergy

People who are not allergic to kiwi, it is one of the most perfect food to add in their diet. Kiwi is rich in vitamin A and E, potassium and omega-3. Kiwi fruits are also high in fibre and have anti-oxidant properties that help in fighting cancer. But for people who are allergic to kiwi, this could give them night mares. Allergic reaction cannot be detected at the first consumption. It might be observed after the first consumption.  Mild symptoms of kiwi allergy are given as follows:

• Skin rashes
• Itching in the mouth
• Symptoms of oral allergy syndrome (OAS) due to cross reaction with pollen, other fruits and dust.
• Inflammation in the mouth and throat.

A person who is exposed to kiwis even after being allergic may have some severe sysmptoms. These severe symptoms are given below:

• Abdominal pains
• Numbness in the mouth
• Difficulty in breathing
• Vomiting and stomach upset
• Diarrhea
• Loss of consciousness
• Loss in blood pressure
• Higher heart rate

These above signs may lead to anaphylactic shock. In such a case you must immediately seek doctors help as it may result in death.

In children the symptoms of kiwi allergy may vary from that of adults. It is suggested to consult your doctor before introducing any new food to an infant. Children are more prone to allergy hence special attention is required in their case. In children the signs of allergic reaction can include:

• Hives and other skin rashes
• Patches on the skin
• Red dry patch on the skin
• Difficulty in breathing
• Irritation and excess crying
• Stomach upsets
• Diarrhea
• Bloated abdomen

You must see a doctor when you observe the early signs of an allergy because this may lead to something severe.  Kiwi allergy symptoms are similar like the symptoms of any other food allergies, so it can be a bit difficult to detect.  So, it is best to seek the help allergist to determine which allergen are you affected from.
