Potential complications and risk factors for LASIK surgery

Posted by Suresafe alarms on April 5th, 2018

You may sometimes see very aggressive marketing campaigns for some LASIK providers claiming guaranteed 100% success rate and no risks at all. Such advertisements can be sometimes misleading. While it is true that more than 95% of patients report satisfactory results and complications are very rare, you must remember that, as is mentioned on FDA website, ‘There are never any guarantees in medicine.’ The same is true with LASIK surgery, and anyone trying to offer you LASIK without properly inform you about the potential complications and risk factors is doing a disservice. Hence, you must take your time to learn about those factors and take them into account while making your decisions.

What to consider before taking LASIK

As mentioned earlier, there are rare cases with complications during surgery, hence if those risks are unacceptable to you, then you can opt not to get LASIK. You can discuss the risk probabilities with your surgeon. You must also verify that there are no restrictions on LASIK at your workplace. If you have refractive instability (that is, your eyesight has changed in the past year and consequently you needed to update your glasses prescription) due to any reason such as diabetes, hormonal fluctuations, diabetes or medications then you must wait till your eyesight stabilizes. You must also reconsider if you have any condition that may inhibit wound healing such as autoimmune diseases, HIV or diabetes. If you have glaucoma, inflammation of the eye, previous eye surgeries, eye injuries or any other issues relating to the eye, you should discuss them with your doctor. FDA does not approve the use of lasers on minors, hence you must be an adult. If you participate in contact sports such as American football, wrestling, boxing, mixed martial arts etc. then LASIK is not recommended.  If you have a thin cornea, it creates a risk factor since LASIK involves reshaping thecornea. If you have larger than normal pupils then you must discuss the matter with your doctor as well. It might cause issues such as halos or glare during low light conditions. Having dry eyes is also something to be considered, since LASIK can aggravate the condition. You must also consider that LASIK is not covered by most health insurance plans. The cost of LASIK surgery has fallen over the years, but it is still a significant expense that you will need to bear out of your pockets.

Complications during the surgery

Another aspect is arisk of complications during the surgery. It is to be noted that due to general experience in the procedure and advancements in technology complication are rare. In about 3-4% of cases, the patients may not have the desired results and may need to still use prescription glasses or contact lenses. They may opt for further corrective surgeries. In very rare cases complications may cause degradation of vision which cannot be corrected with prescription glasses or debilitating visual symptoms such as glare, double vision, halos etc.
