What Do UK Cities Really Spend on an Engagement Ring

Posted by David Johntson on June 26th, 2018

According to the publicly-accepted rule, you should be spending approximately three months' wages on an engagement ring for your partner. But how many would-be husbands and wives are actually spending that amount?

To find out, Hipper.com surveyed 2,000 people across the UK, asking them exactly how much they spent on their engagement ring, and comparing it to the average salary across the country. What they discovered is that people aren't spending anywhere near three months wages - in fact, they're spending 0.57x the average monthly wage - or £1,042.

On top of this revelation, Hipper also set out to discover the most generous cities across the UK when it comes to engagement ring spending. They found that Belfast are the biggest spenders, with an average ring-spend of £1,567.18, closely followed by Gloucester (£1,350.50), London (£1,328.48) and Portsmouth (£1,1169.36).

At the other end of the scale, Norwich were the least generous, spending £614.10. Just ahead of them were Worcester (£675.50), Wrexham (£753.22), York (£756.88) and Aberdeen (£789.52).
