Discussion question

Do you believe that the push for the label of sexual ambiguity, difference, or problem onto children through medicalization leads to stigmatization? (34)

Speculative answer I believe that the increased push for sexual ambiguity, sexual differentiation, and sexual problem on children through medical practices leads to stigmatization.

As the author states, the best way to improve the quality of life is to remove or reduce the importance of gender categorization and the need for categorization (34). Sexual variances should not be responded to and the focus should be on the health of the children born having genital variation, but not for their difference. The identification of children as having sexual ambiguity tends to create stigma to them, and they may feel rejected or not like other people. It is unnecessary for children to undergone certain therapies unless for health issue since the therapies do not cure stigmatization. Medical treatments for such children are not performed with a sole aim of preventing stigmatization and trauma, but rather to maintain social order (32). It would be more appropriate to provide counseling to the children born with sexual ambiguity rather than subjecting them to medical treatments and surgery that do not benefit them socially. It would be necessary to avoid the stigmatization by sexual differences since it does no good to children.

Key points

It is apparent that children born with ‘sexual ambiguity’ tend to suffer from stigmatization upon the realization that they are different from others and there is nothing much they can do about it.

Therapy and other medical treatment methods do not necessarily cure stigmatization since the children have to confront the issue throughout their interaction with others.
