Lyrical Ballad

The beginning of the poem is with the speaker visiting the banks of river Wye which is in the south east of Wales, a place he had had visited five years back. Demonstrating the affection and the sweet memories he had of the place, the poet argues that the memories of the scene are what has been keeping him sane. Living in the “din/ Of towns and cities”, the vivid memories that he has regarding the memory of every detail of the river bank have been keeping him sane. On this occasion, the poet says that he is experiencing an odd combination of the current impressions, the memory of what he used to feel and how he will remember the current memory in the future. He thinks he is going to change with time from what he was on his first visit being a child with a lot of energy to “boun (d) O'er the mountains”. In those days, nature was an exemplification of everything to him.

In his present visit, he believes that he has learned how to look at nature having a broader perspective in term of his life. He says he has learnt not to look and say, “Holy cow, the view from up there is pretty awesome!” and consequently run (bound(ing) O'er the mountains” again. It is right to argue that the writer used to enjoy nature but hardly understood. Presently, he is in a position to look at nature as perceive a wider, deeper meaning to the beauty found in nature. Through the portrayal of the sentimentalism that he has regarding the initial visit to the bank and the current visit, we can see the powerful feeling and connection that he has with nature. The fact that he says that it kept him safe is an indication of the high regard that he has for nature and the significance it has in human life.
