Since installing these doors and windows is a serious investment, you can’t let a quack masquerading as the top contractor take you for the ride. As crucial as finding the right contractor is, here’s what you need to consider before jumping into a deal. After all, informed decisions are the right decisions.

You’ll be signing a contract with the contractor that mentions the project’s starting date. Very few contractors are capable of getting on with the project from the signing date, as several key aspects need to be factored in and planned out. However, many run-of-the-mill contractors often stretch the starting date deliberately once the paycheque is received. Resultantly, the project is delayed, causing you annoyance and extra expenses. To hedge against delays, ask the contractor about the exact dates on which the installation will start and complete.    

Preparations:

The installation is labour intensive not only for the contractor but for the homeowner as well. The work area may encompass a major part of your home, forcing you to move furniture, pets, vehicle and other belongings away from the harm’s way. Ask the contractor how long you need these make-shift arrangements – overnight, a day, a couple of days or more. A reliable contractor may help you clear the work area, and the real deal is to zero in on one such contractor. 

Warranties:

Buying aluminium windows and doors takes a heavy toll of your renovation or construction budget. It’s imperative to know whether or not the inventory comes with a warranty. If you purchase warranty-less doors and windows, be prepared to bleed money on repairs and replacements. However, only product warranties won’t suffice for a risk-free experience, as an installation warranty is equally important. Instances of contractors cutting corners on quality for the sake of timeliness are commonplace, exposing the property to defects in workmanship.

An efficient, reliable contractor is likely to throw up a list of references in the initial brief to earn your business. The references testify his ability to meet customer specifications, expectations and deadlines, and he has every reason to reveal them. Contrarily, a quack will be reluctant to speak about references, which should be taken as a red flag. Take time to visit at least a couple of references and talk to them about the contractor’s credentials and ethics. Don’t forget to ask what went wrong during the project and how the contractor handled it eventually.     

Clean-ups:

Post-project clean-ups are a fact of life when it comes to window and door installations. There will be dust and debris, especially around the installation area, causing health issues and incidents. Who will get rid of this mess – you, your contractor or any third party? The question needs to be taken up with your contractor at the time of signing the contract. In case the contractor is willing to spruce up space, ask whether the service will be free or paid.
