Where are the best beaches in Costa Rica?

Posted by Joel Sanchez on August 10th, 2019

Some of the most amazing features of Costa Rica are the popular Costa Rica beaches. The coastline of this country stretches over 1100 miles so there are a lot of beaches to see – with every type of shell, rock, and sand beach you can imagine.

With warm waters year-round, the country’s exotic “playas” have something to offer for everyone. Come to scuba dive, surf, swim, sunbathe, or just take in the amazing scenery. There are a lot of beaches that have a sparse population so you can have the seclusion and privacy for a peaceful vacation. All in all, Costa Rica is a beach lover’s paradise.

The following are some of the best beaches in Costa Rica:

Playa Conchal

Situated in the Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Conchal is one of the country’s most unique and stunning beaches. Once you arrive, you will realize that the entire beach is composed of millions of tiny seashells. In fact, this is the reason the beach is named “Playa Conchal” as it means “Shell Beach”. Thanks to the clearest waters, scuba diving and/or snorkeling is a must! Furthermore, this beach has an amazing array of marine life on display. There’s a few camp grounds, a golf course, and national parks nearby as well.

Playa Montezuma

Situated at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in a small remote fishing village, Playa Montezuma is renowned for its sandy beach and tropical surroundings including waterfalls, rivers, and islands. It is highly recommended that you visit the waterfalls that are over 50 feet high. They are a famous tourist attraction and a lot of people love to jump the falls. Although the small town has become a famous hotspot for young tourists, the beach is almost deserted and offers isolated areas to relax in privacy as well as secret surf spots. All in all, Playa Montezuma is a carefree place with a mellow vibe.

Playa Bahia Ballena

Created in 1990 to protect the rock and coral reefs around the Isla Ballena, the Marino Ballena National Park is an important island for green iguanas, basilisk lizards, and seabird nesting colonies. From December to March, you can also see humpback whales here. Furthermore, bottlenose dolphins can be spotted along the coast as well. All in all, Playa Bahia Ballena is one of the best places to visit for the budget tourist offering a variety of things to do besides sunbathing – such as horseback riding, kayaking, or surfing.

Playa Flamingo

With its pristine clear blue waters and stunning white sand, Playa Flamingo is the ideal beach to go to. It offers its visitors some of the best deep-sea fishing in the world. Swordfish, Snapper, Marlin, and Tuna can all be found off the coast throughout the year. Playa Flamingo also offers lots of water sport activities, parks, and golf courses.

In a nutshell, whatever beach you choose, you will be amazed by its natural beauty as well as the relaxing feeling you get when there. Costa Rica is truly an amazing place to see and visit again and again.
