3 Ways to Encourage Reading in Your Home

Posted by Jennifer L Kropf on February 21st, 2020

One of the best ways to help kids succeed at school is to create a reading habit at home. They'll be improving their fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking abilities with just this single action!

I mean, who doesn't want to help their kids do better?

So, here are three easy ways to make reading a priority in your home!

1. Let Them Choose

As with adults, kids want to feel in control. They'll be much more excited about reading if they are able to choose what they read. Even if that is primarily pictures or cartoons, begin where they are! Get them excited about it. The rest will take care of itself.

2. Incorporate it Into Your Daily Routine

What we do consistently is more important than what we do occasionally. Start with 5 minutes of reading and build over time. Find the best time in your routine. Often, transitions are best.

In our house, the time right after school or right before bed works well. Be flexible if you need to, but experiment with the same times of day to see what you can follow through on with the kids.

3. Have an Amazing Reading Space

Have you ever seen those beautiful libraries? Or cozy reading nooks? Don't they make you want to curl up with a good book? Yeah, me too.

We may not be able to create something as intense as the professionals, but having a special space for reading will make for a unique experience the kids will get excited about.
