The Medical Council of India (MCI) was first evolved on 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933, which is also known as Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE). It is a licensure examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) in India. 

  FMGE/MCI Objectives

The major objective was to establish uniform standards of higher qualifications in medicine and recognition of such medical qualifications in India and Abroad. This screening test is one of the mandatory requirement for an Indian citizen who has a medical degree from a college outside India and desirous to do further medicine practice in the country.

 Later, the Indian Medical Council Act was repealed and replaced with a new Act in 2002 with mutual recognition of medicine field.

Provisions of Indian Medical Council Act

With these newly amended regulations, the number of medical colleges increased gradually after Independence and provisions of Indian Medical Council Act were not adequate to meet with the regulations progress in medical education. As a result, this was further modified in 1964, 1993 and 2001.

MCI Screening Test Regulations

After the successful completion of MBBS, the medical graduates are expected to appear for a screening test conducted by National Board of Examination accredited with Medical Council of India. Qualifying MCI Screening exam is mandatory for all Indian citizens who are desirous to get permanent registration with the Medical Council of India on or after the 15th of March, 2002.

 MCI Screening Exam Pattern

MCI Screening Test is conducted twice a year as per National Board of Examination, New Delhi.

  • There shall be three papers of Multiple-choice questions in pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical medicine and its allied subjects may include Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • The language of the Test shall be conducted in English.
  • The duration of each paper will be of three hours.

 MCI Screening Test Eligibility

  • A candidate has to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in each paper for qualifying the MCI Screening Test.
  • No candidate shall be allowed to appear for the Screening Test unless the Candidate completes requisite internship for medical practice in India.
