Movie Review (Synopsis):

The Cold Light of Day was scripted by newcomer John Petro and Scott Wiper (Captain Jack, The Condemned), with filmmaker Mabrouk El Mechri – a.k.a. the writer/director responsible for the cleverly self-reflexive indie flick JCVD – holding the directorial reins. Take that decidedly mixed collective resume for what it’s worth.

Will Shaw (Henry Cavill) goes to Spain for a weeklong sailing vacation with his family but his whole world turns upside down when the family is kidnapped by intelligence agents hell-bent on recovering a mysterious briefcase and Will suddenly finds himself on the run.

This film both reads and looks (based on the trailer) like a case of “casting overkill,” where several A-listers and respectable thespians are signed on for what is otherwise a pretty conventional and run-of-the-mill thriller (similar to the recently-released Man on a Ledge) that involves CIA agents with dubious agendas, dangerous criminals, and an ordinary man desperately attempting to track down the mysterious MacGuffin suitcase that will save both him and his loved ones.

The Cold Light of Day sadly comes off another potential instant-throwaway Hollywood thriller - which would make two busts in a row for Weaver, between this and last year’s (teenage) Jason Bourne-style flick, Abduction. On the other hand, perhaps she, Willis, and Cavill will ultimately have managed to help elevate this flick above the level of being a disposable B-grade action movie.

The one thing that’s consistently fun to watch here is Weaver, whose prominent if surely rent-inspired role as a ruthless Terminator in pantsuits generates plenty of accidentally funny stuff. There’s not much left of downtown Madrid once she’s emptied her semi-automatic into passing bystanders; even when she’s caught looking very intently in the wrong direction, which is often, her brusque, clock-punching performance isn’t as frazzled and wooden as Cavill’s. Both are hilariously under-directed. “You f**cking amateur!” Sigourney yells at her co-star, though it could just as easily have been el Mechri at the business end of a furious out-take.

From the outset, The Cold Light of Day  purports to be nothing more than a by-the-numbers action thriller. What’s shocking is how it manages to take this predictable-but-sturdy template and sell it short. Cavill, Willis and Weaver all phone in their parts, perhaps sensing that Scott Wiper  and John Petro ’s script is irredeemably clichéd and riddled with plot holes so large you could stick your arm through. Director Mabrouk el Mechri  makes some minor attempts to imprint his signature on the film (zooming through mirrors, pulling back through car windscreen bullet holes), but is betrayed by ham-fisted editing so that even a Bourne -lite car chase through Madrid is robbed of much excitement.

here are a few moments of lightness – Madrid native Echegui tries her hardest to inject some spark into the proceedings – but not enough to salvage the surrounding dreck. When Weaver lets out an amusingly excited ‘whoop!’ during the aforementioned chase sequence, she’s the only one in the cinema enjoying herself.

The Cold Light Of Day could also provide some measure of the drawing-power of Superman-in-waiting Henry Cavill (who gained attention thorough his muscular performance in Immortals) who is suitably earnest in the central role of struggling American businessman Will. The film opens in Europe prior to a September release date for the US.

Arriving in Spain for a tense clan gathering, Will swims to shore from the family boat. When he returns, his family has disappeared and he subsequently learns that his father Martin (Bruce Willis) was much more than a cultural attaché for the American government.

The nods to Hitchcock include killing off a major character within the first thirty minutes (like Psycho) and the introduction of a ‘MacGuffin’ in the form of a coveted briefcase containing unspecified documents allegedly vital to national security.

On one hand, it’s easy to be enthusiastic about engrossing yourself in the story but on the other, The Cold Light of Day gives very few reasons why you should. Better spy movies have thrived on providing viewers with at least some clue on what motivates each character to retrieve an important object, kill a person or escape from capture so the audience can make sense of what transpires onscreen. The Cold Light of Day, quite questionably, never reveals or alludes to the life-or-death contents of the briefcase, meaning the biggest difficulty is in believing the necessity of all the carnage. It’s perfectly reasonable that Will is willing to fire his first shot and participate in a mad car chase only because he wants to save his family. But it’s hardly convincing to have pockets of mercenaries and agents chasing a briefcase that might as well be empty.

Fortunately, there remains a vestige of believability in Will. As an innocent civilian unwittingly hooked into a web of dangerous games between mercenaries and agents, Cavill brings a sort of genuine clumsiness to his role, allowing the audience to easily buy his character. For this reason, there won’t be any explosive set-piece or many scenes featuring hand-to-hand combat. There’re a few tricks to prevent the action scenes from becoming too stale and while some of the stunts are decent efforts, others don’t always work. Handcuffed between the tragic decision to set most of the action scenes in the night and the already blurry shots of fast-moving action taken by handheld cameras, you would be hard pressed to find any shot of action that isn’t obscured in any way.
