After Care for Hair Extensions

Beauty is a process. It takes care, effort and knowledge. It takes doing right by your body and using products that optimize your health. While this may be obvious in some ways, it’s easy to forget that without proper care, all things degrade. When you make an investment in your appearance, like purchasing luxury hair extensions, it’s important to keep up with the after care, so that your hair extensions will keep looking gorgeous for their entire wearable lives. Here are a few tips.

  • Even high quality hair extensions need special care, because they are made up of non-living hair. Non-living hair does not receive nutrients from your body, so no matter how much water you drink or how often you take your omega-3’s, you hair extensions will not reap the benefits. How, then, do you keep them healthy?
  • You need the right products. Your shampoo and conditioner should be specially formulated for hair extensions. It will need to have extra moisturizing power, and be infused with vitamin and minerals that your extensions will otherwise lack. Avoid sulfites, and chose a product line that will protect the color of your extensions, like Kapello Hair. Make sure your conditioner leaves your hair silky and tangle free, because you do not want to brush too vigorously, or wind up with matted hair.
  • While washing your hair, don’t scrub. Work shampoo gently, at the root, letting it rinse through the ends. If your extensions need a little extra conditioning, apply your conditioner from the mid-shaft to the ends, and let it work for a few minutes before applying it closer to the root and rinsing. Use a soft towel to gently absorb excess water.
  • Use alcohol free styling products that protect against heat and UV rays. It’s a good idea to use heated styling products at the lowest effective temperature to minimize damage and breakage. Plus, avoid using heat on application sites if possible.
  • If you need to remove bonded extensions, purchase a solvent bond remover, like the one that Kapello Hair offers. This product will safely dissolve keratin bonds without damaging your natural hair. Bond removers make the process ease and pain-free. You can crush the bonds, and your extensions will slide out easily.
  • Last but not least, remember to invest in a loop brush to smooth your hair extensions. The loop brush was designed specifically for hair extension care, and its looped bristles slide easily through hair extensions, removing any tangles. It is gentle on your scalp, and will not pull out individual strands of hair. You may want to sleep with your hair in a high bun, or wrapped up to avoid tangles or breakage due to friction.

With the right care, semi-permanent hair extensions can last up to nine months of gorgeous wearability. If you want to keep your hair extensions looking natural, shiny and enviably full, make sure you are treating them right and giving them what they need, just like you do for the rest of your body.
