What Is Red Lead?

Red Lead is a type of chemical compound which is a crystalline amorphous pigment. It is known by other names around the world such as minium, plumbic oxide and lead IV oxide.

Red lead is used for manufacturing lead glass and red pigments. Its color varies from bright red to orange, and is used to make paint for iron and steel objects to prevent their rusting. The chemical name of red lead is Lead Terta Oxide, which is a compound that is soluble in water. This compound is made through metallic oxidation of lead or litharge, which is lead monoxide.

Using Red Lead as Primer for Metals For Protection From Corrosion

A very widely used agent for protecting metals from corrosion is the red lead primer. It has an orange-red color and has been used on bridges all around the world. In building construction, red lead is used in the form of a primer. Since it is resistant to sea water as well, red lead is used on ships for protecting their hulls and decks.

Composition Of Red Lead In Primers

The percentage of red lead in primers has grown over the years. Earlier, 85% of red led was present in primers that were applied on all kinds of steel surfaces to make them resistant to rust. This percentage has increased and now primers contain 95% to 98% of lead in them.

Red lead does not dissolve easily in water or even in alcohol, but it can be dissolved in some other type of liquid substances, like hydrochloric acid.

Jointing Grade, Setting Grade And Non-Setting Grade Of Red Lead From Manufactures In India

There are three grades of red lead that are supplied by red lead manufacturers in India- Jointing grade, setting grade and the non-setting grade. Each grade of red lead differ from one another in colour, structure, density and some other attributes, while a few attributes remain the same, like crystal structure, thermal stability, solubility in water, etc.

Use Of Various Grades Of Red Lead

Jointing grade lead is used on boilers and water lines, while setting grade lead is used in lead acid batteries, heat proof glasses, ceramics, optical glasses and fluorescent tubes. Red lead of non-setting grade is used for surface coating, in storage batteries, ceramics, rubbers and plastics for various kinds.
