Be Healthy by Using Organic Mattresses

Like many people, you are probably interested in buying an organic mattress, but are put off by the price, which is significantly more expensive—about 20% more than a conventional mattress. With all the hype and misinformation that’s out there, it can be hard to make a truly informed buying decision. Are organic mattresses truly healthier and greener? Are they worth the money? In this article, our aim is to give you factual information without their hype so you can ultimately decide for yourself.

You and your family will spend a lot of time sleeping on your beds—at least 6-9 hours a day or at least 1/3 of your life. In fact, this alone makes it worth thinking about what you are sleeping on. What's really in that mattress? If you are using a conventional mattress made of petroleum based chemicals, then you are essentially sleeping on chemical flame retardants wrapped in a plastic polyvinyl chloride (PVC) mattress coverall of which has been proven harmful to health. The manufacturing and disposal of PVC alone release dioxins that have been strongly linked to cancer. Phthalates, which are components of PVC,have been shown to interfere with the male reproductive system and testosterone. Is your kid sleeping on conventional mattresses? California just recently banned phthalates in products that are designed for kids under three years of age. Any mattress with PVC plastic covering is a cause for concern.

Conventional polyurethane foam mattressesare highly flammable, as they are made from petroleum based substances. They also needadditional flame retardant chemicals such as polybrominateddiphenyl ethers or PBDEs. Sadly, PBDEsare proven to accumulate in blood and disrupt thyroid hormones. They have since been banned in Europe and a majority of the states in the US. If you are still using a very old mattress that might still contain PBDEs, consider switching to an organic mattress from stores like The Organic Mattress Store Inc.

Even newer mattresses still use flame retardants like chlorinated-TRIS, which are known to cause cancer and has in fact been banned in children's sleepwear. Most conventional mattress manufacturers refuse to disclose what chemicals they use as fire retardants, saying that is a ‘trade secret.’ Are you really willing to risk it?

Organic mattresses are healthier because they are made from natural materials like natural latex (from rubber trees). Rubber trees from India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Viet Nam and Malaysia. They are infused with layers of wool, which is a natural fire retardant. They do not off-gas harmful chemicals that can cause allergies and serious health issues. If you are serious about protecting the health and overall well-being of you and your family, perhaps it’s time to splurge on an organic mattress. Don’t worry—the best ones last 20 years or more, so you know you’re getting excellent value.
