FSSAI Basic Registration: Documents required and Procedure

FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI is an act used to secure the laws relating to food related business for food to control their sailing, importing manufacturing, storage and distribution to make sure the availability of food for human consumption and other food-related issues.

FSSAI registration is mandatory compliance that ensures the safety of food products supplied or manufactured by various establishments in India.

Food Business Operators who are involved in the food business have to obtain FSSAI Registration. FSSAI registration fee is the license fee charged by the government from the food business operators.

Basic FSSAI License Fees Structure

  • New application: Rs.100/year
  • Renewal application: Rs.100/year
  • Modification license: Rs.100/year
  • Duplicate license: 10% of the applicable license fee

State FSSAI License Fees Structure

  • New application Production of above 1 Metric Tons (MT) per day: Rs.5000
  • Below 1 Metric Tons (MT) of production: Rs.3000
  • Hotels up to 4 star: Rs.5000
  • All food service providers such as clubs, restaurants, boarding houses etc:  Rs.2000
  • Duplicate license: 10% of the applicable license fee

Central FSSAI License Fees Structure

  • New application: Rs.7500/year
  • Renewal application: Rs.7500/year
  • Modification license: Rs.7500/year
  • Duplicate license: 10% of the applicable license fee

The food business operator has to understand the correct breakdown of the fees structure while planning to start a food business in India.

Documents Required for FSSAI Registration

FSSAI Registration is mandatory for food business operator to ensure that the food products manufactured are safe for consumption by the consumers. The documents required for FSSAI registration are:

  • Duly filled and signed application form
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • Contact details of the directors.
  • Identity proof of Applicant (Food Business Operator)
  • Proof of property ownership
  • Address Proof
  • Business Address Proof
  • Rent Agreement
  • Food safety management system plan
  • List of food items that have to be manufactured.
  • Food Safety Management System Plan of incorporation

It is very important for food business operators to obtain the FSSAI License in order to efficiently run the business. FSSAI license number is a 14-digit number issued to registered Food Business Operators (FBOs); it comprises five sections, each of them providing different information about the food business operator. A basic FSSAI License can be issued in 7-10 days. A State and Central license can take a time period of 30 days.
