What is an LED light?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. It is a small bulb which has the capability of transmitting high-intensity and focused light using only a third of the power that older technologies required. Why is LED energy efficient?

There is a very simple principle behind LEDs being energy efficient and other technologies not being so. In other technologies, electricity is used to heat up a metal element cased inside a glass casing (metal usually employed is tungsten), or to ionize a gas inside tubes or for excitation of gas molecules. When these objectives are achieved, the consequence is emission of light. It would interest you to know that the physics here involves losses at every step in the process and consequently, more energy is required to produce light. In LEDs, however, electricity is directly converted into light without involvement of any middleman (heat, ionization or excitation). This is why very less wattage is required as compared to its counterparts to produce the same amount of light. LEDs produce 100 lumens per watt of electricity, whereas the other luminaries require anywhere between 20 to 40 watts for 100 lumens.
