Will Your Body Allow a Breast Implant Surgery?

Breast augmentation or breast implant surgery is one of the most widely performed cosmetic surgeries in the UK and the world. This procedure restores or increases breast size with the use of saline or silicone gel implants; or through fat transfer in some cases. Although silicone implantation has a long, successful track record in regaining, restoring, or enhancing a woman’s figure, there are several factors that you should consider regarding your health, to ensure that your body can undergo the procedure safely and with fewer risks.

Before surgery, it is critical that you have thorough consultations with your surgeon, who should in turn order your medical history, along with a list of appropriate screenings to make certain that you are a fit candidate for the procedure. Your surgeon must be able to discuss all the details of the surgery with you, including the different types of implants that you can choose from your options for size, surface texture, shape, and placement—all of which should be based on your personal circumstances and the risks and benefits of the surgery.

During consultation, it is important that you talk about your medical history as well as any medical conditions and/or drug allergies that you may have. Your surgeon will also ask about previous surgeries you may have had, particularly to your breasts and areas that are directly adjacent to your chest. You will likewise be asked about the drugs you are taking currently or have taken recently, including health supplements and OTC medications. It is critical that you tell your surgeon if you suspect that you may be pregnant.

Should you wish to undergo breast augmentation for breast reconstruction, it is imperative that you speak with your surgeon about personal circumstances, particularly in terms of being treated with radiation and/or chemotherapy. These conditions can and will affect risks of some complications as well as the overall appearance of your reconstructed breasts. Talk to your surgeon about the volume of breast tissue that will remain and requirements for future screening after surgery.

Qualifying for breast implant surgery largely depends on your health situation. If you are in good health and have realistic expectations, you are likely to be a good candidate for breast augmentation. Just the same, selecting a surgeon that you can trust is critical to the success and safety of your surgery. Choose a surgeon based on his or her experience with breast implantation surgery, education, certification, and training, and perhaps most importantly, your comfort level with allowing him or her conduct the procedure on you.
