Air handling units and Pre-fabricated ducts

There are two classifications of air handling units such as

• Single skin air handling units
• Double skin air handling units

Single skin air handling units are used for applications where ventilation is required and double skin air handling units are used for applications where there is a need of air conditioning.

Air handling units are used for various types of applications such as

• There are vertical air handling units which are made to cover less floor space than horizontal units. Maintenance and service of the vertical air handling unit is enabled by an open panel in front of the fan.
• There are horizontal air handling units which have robust and flexible alliance of filters, coils etc which makes this air handling unit suitable for different applications. The horizontal air handling unit is easy to maintain and easily serviceable due to the arrangement of important components to base tray.
• There are ceiling suspended units which can be attached and hanged from the ceiling and therefore doesn’t require any floor space. The ceiling suspended unit is absolutely noiseless and can be enclosed in the conditioned place or above false ceiling therefore making design flexible and decreasing installation charges.

Pre-fabricated ducts

These ducts are manufactured in factories instead of sites and have the following benefits over site fabricated ducts:

• Less leakage due to less loss of energy.
• Less lead time due to fast completion of project
• Ducts are manufactured from G.I. coils and not sheets and so the alignment is suitable after the installation.
• G.I. coils offer consistent quality in the material.
• Male components of profile are manufactured by machine instead of hands to maintain consistency.
• Components such as tapers, offsets, elbows, profiles etc are manufactured on machine known as plasma profile-cutter.
• Elbow’s curved side is manufactured on rolling machine instead of hands and lock is built on Roll-former.
• Fast production
• Less wastage
• Less leakage
• Fast installation

Pre-fabricated ducts are important for HVAC systems and if there is a delay for duct work then there might be some implications.

There are various types of pre fabricated ducts such as

• TDF duct
• Rectangular pre-fabricated duct
• Factory fabricated duct

Foam based pre-insulated duct work is being used in place of old sheet metal these days because it offers flexibility of use in different shapes and sizes. This duct can be used in hospitals, isolation rooms, industries, public buildings, airports, hotels, commercial centers, isolation rooms, laboratories, offices.

These ducts give thermal as well as acoustic benefits in a single operation and there is no requirement for the metal ducts. There is no requirement for insulation after fabrication of duct as it enhances thermal insulation as well as sound absorption with the help of glass wool duct board. There are various duct boards (faced on both surfaces) available for self-supporting duct systems.

Duct’s external face is made using a surface which is strengthened using foil facing made of aluminium to ensure that duct is airtight except vapor. The internal face of duct contacting airstream has surface made of glass, mat facing, aluminium or glass.
