You must be getting jittery about appearing for an IELTS test. Given the complex nature of the test and the wide sections it covers, it can indeed be a daunting task. We present to you the experience of an English teacher who holds a master’s degree in English besides being a native speaker about his experience of facing the IELTS test. The IELTS tips that he has given will prove to be helpful for those who wish to prepare for the same. We all know that the test comprises of four sections- listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Reading

This section concentrates on the reading skills of the examinee. For this aspect, you will have to prepare by reading various extracts,  words, their pronunciation, and their meaning. Time is a constraint and you will have to practice swift reading. The sections for the academic and the general category are different. It usually contains 3 sections which have 40 questions to be answered in 60 minutes. These texts are authentic and taken from some books, journals or magazines. They contain text appropriate for undergraduates or postgraduates. The text may contain graphs and images and questions related to them.

Writing

The writing task will take 2 hours to finish. The test is divided into two tasks: task1 and task2. Task 1 should take around 20 minutes. It calls for formal style writing to be completed in a span of 20 minutes. The task2 calls for another 40 minutes, again formal style and 250 words of written expression. The writing section must also be prepared using test papers which are available online. Practice your writing skills and do so while keeping the factor of time in mind. Swift writing practice will help you in completing the task well within the given time frame.

Listening

This section is related to your listening and comprehension skills of English. For this, the institutions use a recorded message which you are required to hear. Almost immediately, you are asked multiple questions related to the recording. It is important to hear the recording carefully and answering the queries precisely. Speed is a matter of concern. You have to be really fast so that you don't miss out on answering the following queries. This aspect is best done by undergoing practical exercises with the trainer. Once you are confident, try to perform the exercise in real time with all the conditions similar to the real testing. This will clarify where you stand.

The Truth About The Speaking Test

The IELTS speaking test is all about your interactive skills as an English speaker. The examiner awaits you, equipped with a stopwatch, a recording device, and a set of documents. The first few minutes are spent in introducing yourself and answering questions put up by the examiner. The real business begins after some time. The examiner gives you a paper with a topic on it and asks you to prepare the related talk within a span of 1 and a half minutes. Remember you have to use good vocabulary and abstract nouns in your account. The piece has to be an interesting one, however mundane the topic might be. After listening to your account, the examiner might ask you questions related to the topic. Remember you have to apply the same principles to your answer as well.
