Vaalwateris a town in theLimpopo Province and has recently been renamed to Mabatlane. Situated in the centre of the Waterberg District, near the upper reaches of the Mokolo River, Vaalwater is known to be a very charming town. Limpopo borders Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe making it the ideal entrance to Africa. The province is the most Northern Province in South Africa. It was named after the great Limpopo River, which flows along the northern border. Featuring striking views of a rich wildlife and nature, plant life etc, the area also has a rich history to share.

Offering numerous outdoor activities, the village has beautiful qualities withrugged features where onecan enjoy bird watching, mountain biking, hiking and many more adventurous activities. The village is surrounded by nature, farms and reserves all offering scenic views. There is a wide range of diverse animals and plant life in the area and the town plays a large role in the development of eco-tourism projects. The Waterberg habitat serves as a Nature Conservancy, the area protects over 150 000 hectares of the area.

The Waterberg Nature Conservancy is the first district from northern South Africa to be acknowledged by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. The Waterbergarea is a paradise of nature and nature lovers will appreciate beautiful undamaged land with numerous rivers, streams, swamps that stretch for over 150km. Picturesque Mountain views are exactly what a visitor will appreciate from this area, giving a relaxed and calm feeling. A visit to the Waterberg area is guaranteed to be filled with activity and learning experiences.

The Vaalwater area usually receives an average of 500mm rain throughout the year, most of the rain is experienced in the mid summer months.

The one street town is said to be one of the most beautiful towns in the region. Named Vaalwater by the early trekkers, because of the clear water supply obtained from the area. In the past the Waterberg area was a town where living was hard and unpractical; even now it is said that it takes a special person to permanently live in the mountainous area. Today the Vaalwater is known as a popular hunting destination, attracting international hunters.

There are private and provincial hunting farms in the area, but for those who do not want to hunt; there are lodges, bnb’s and numerous accommodation places available in the area. For the hunters there are set laws that need to be followed, these include: hunting permits and monitoring the animals.

While in the area, apart from the working farms and fun activities found in the area guests should consider the attractions offered by the town namely; The Rhino Museum, Waterberg Museum, the Church Of St John the Baptist and of course the area’s where San Rock Art is still visible. The area has developed, operating working farms and offering visitors numerous accommodation options. The annual events are also something to look forward to in the Vaal, the Waterberg Game Festival and the VaalwaterVeteraan Fees, the town sees many events like 4x4 racing throughout the year.
