What Should You Look for While Buying a Yoga Mat?

Whether you are new to yoga or have already been practicing it for quite some time, you need to invest in a good quality mat—one that is suitable to your practice. Each person’s yoga mat needs are unique. Someone you know might have great feedback about a certain type of mat, but that does not mean that it’s also the right choice for you. Here are some things that you should look into when choosing the perfect fit:

  1. Weight

Weight is one of the first things that you should consider as you look for a yoga mat. A mat that’s too heavy for your liking can be a pain to carry around; it might just discourage you from going to your yoga classes. You’ll end up hating it and eventually buying a new one. If you know that you’re going to be bringing your mat outside from your house to your gym and vice versa, choose one that you can conveniently carry. However, the weight shouldn’t be much of a concern if you’re planning to just use your mat at home.

  1. Size

Look for a mat that’s right for your body. If you have a rounder body or if you are really tall, you will want to invest in a mat that is wider or longer. There are mats that are shaped round or are supersized, which can be great if you’re planning to do yoga at home. However, they might not be the wisest options if you’ll be using your mat in a crowded studio.

  1. Stickiness

Another crucial factor to consider is the mat’s stickiness. Avoid mats that are slippery. You won’t want to feel your feet sliding away in certain yoga poses. Go for a mat that has a gripping, non-skid surface. If your yoga practice is fast-paced and you expect a lot of sweating, the mat’s surface is a particularly important consideration.

  1. Thickness

The average thickness of yoga mats is ¼”. However, there are also thicker and thinner mats that you can choose from. It’s advisable that you choose/buy a thicker mat if you have sensitive joints. But if you prefer a hard surface or want something lightweight, a thinner mat is a good choice.
