DIFFERENTIAL STUDY IN THE ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS

Differential Study on the Academic Performance of UB Nursing Students
CHAPTER I
ABSTRACT
The College of Nursing in University of Bohol campus encompasses
different kinds of students studying to become nurses in the future.
Researchers conducted a differential study that was based on the affectation
of the different factors to the academic performances of the nursing students
on the said campus. Eighty respondents that were gathered through
purposive and quota sampling represented the entire population. Researchers
got 40 male students and 40 female students that were evenly subdivided by
each year level. Needed data for the study was acquired through the used of
ready-made questionnaires. Academic comparison was determined
according to the average midterm grade of the respondents in the different
subjects taken and was categorized to meet better differentiation. After data
gathering, the data were tabulated, graphed, analyzed, and met the findings
that majority of the female group and 4th year level group were better
academic performer than others in UBCN. It was concluded that academic
performances of nursing students were affected by their profiles and study
habits. The researchers expected that the research study helped a lot to
nursing students in determining the different factors affecting their struggle
towards nursing profession.

INTRODUCTION
Academic performance needs assessment and interpretation for the completion of
the research. Assessments on academic performance should result into more valid
educational tools for school administration, clinical instructors, students, and parents if
problems associated with their development and success in the nursing profession
occurred. Need being responded by this study is the knowledge deficiency of nursing
students regarding different factors that affect their own study. Many will benefit in the
study especially the entire mass of nursing students in UB, the administration and the CIs.
?Every year many capable undergraduate students fail to attain their academic
goals. Some of these students are unsuccessful in their attempts to enter graduate or
professional schools. Others fail to achieve sufficient grades to remain in their
undergraduate program. The most common "reason" that students offer for not following
the plan is; I?m bright enough to get by without working until the last moment. Besides, I
learn and retain information better if I wait until the night before the exam to prepare for
it. This is a ridiculous attitude. In reality, you learn and retain information best when you
study it throughout the term and review it before the exam. With repeated exposures to
material, you develop what is known as a schema, or information organizer that aids
memory and understanding. Consider for a moment the following situation: You have to
know your way around a new city by next Saturday and no city maps are available to
you. Would you what until Friday night to learn the city streets? Of course not. By
driving around the city every day you would develop a street schema or map that would
make your task much easier.? (Wright 1989) So now, let us wander on the land of
possible factors that affect academe of each individual.

Factors Related to the Academic Performance of Students in the Statistics Course in
Psychology
?Many studies have examined the factors that influence academic performance in
primary and secondary education as well as at university, with the purpose of enhancing
learning at these stages and reducing drop-out rates. It is within this research framework
that we want to emphasize the deficient performance of students enrolled on the statistics
course in the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Barcelona. Consequently, this
paper attempts to determine the factors that affect student performance in this subject by
undertaking an analysis of a structural equation model and determining its stability over
time. In order to accomplish our objective, we worked with two samples of students
enrolled statistics classes. The first group comprised 211 students enrolled in the
academic year 2000?2001, while the second comprised 287 students enrolled in the
academic year 2001?2002. By administering a questionnaire, we obtained information
concerning such variables as demographic data, previous academic record, information
related to the subject and the degree of satisfaction with it, and the final mark obtained by
the students in the subject. The parameters for each group of students were estimated
separately and the goodness of fit of the proposed structural model was assessed. The
data analysis showed a good fit with both databases, but the set of estimated parameters
differed in the two academic years under consideration. (Guardia, et.al)

RELATIONSHIP OF STUDY ATTITUDE AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
OF STUDENTS AT SECONDARY LEVEL IN PUNJAB
?The main purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship of studyattitude
or the students with their academic-performance at secondary level. Study
attitude is student s viewpoint about study and academic performance is academic
achievement of students. The major objectives of the study were to correlate the studyattitude
and academic-performance of students and to compare the study-attitudes of low
and high achievers. All secondary school students of govt. boys and girls high schools in
Punjab province who appeared in ninth grade examination of Boards of Intermediate and
Secondary Education 2003 were taken as population of the students. The province was
divided in to three zones: Northern Punjab, Central Punjab, and Southern Punjab. Two
districts from each zone were selected randomly. The lists of schools located in the
selected districts were obtained from the office of educational management and
information system, Punjab Lahore. The schools were divided into rural and urban girls:
schools and rural and urban boys' schools. One school was selected randomly from each
of the above categories. In this way, twenty-four schools were selected. From each
school, all students appearing in ninth grade examination 2003 were included in the
sample. The variable of study-attitude was measured through the scores obtained by the
students on study-attitude scale (SAS) consisting of 36 items. The items were divided
into eight categories namely attitude toward self, regularity, examination, perseverance,
teacher, subjects, school, and parents'-authority. The study-attitude scale was
standardized by checking the validity and reliability of the scale. Items were dropped
based on weak correlation with total score and low discriminatory power. The variable of
Differential Study on the Academic Performance of UB Nursing Students
academic performance was measured through marks obtained by the students in the
Board Examination held in March 2003. The academic-performance scores were
correlated with study-attitude scores and it was found that study attitude was positively
related to the academic performance. The study attitude scores of females were more
closely related with academic performance as compared to males; similarly study attitude
scores of rural students are more closely related with academic performance as compared
to urban students. Furthermore, mean scores of low and high academic-achievers were
compared and it was found that high achievers and low achievers differ in their study
attitude and female, male and rural, urban students also differ in their study attitude.?

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: TIME ALLOTTED
?Today's college students are less prepared for college-level work than their
predecessors are. Once they get to college, they tend to spend fewer hours studying while
spending more hours working, some even full time (D. T. Smart, C. A. Kelley, & J. S.
Conant, 1999). In this study, the authors examined the effect of both time spent studying
and time spent working on academic performance. The authors further evaluated the
interaction of motivation and ability with study time and its effect on academic
performance. The results suggested that non-ability variables like motivation and study
time significantly interact with ability to influence academic performance.?

THEORITICAL BACKGROUND
NURSING THEORY
SCIENCE OF UNITARY BEINGS by Martha Rogers
?Nursing is a learned profession: a science and art. The uniqueness of nursing is
identified in the phenomena of concerned. Within the viewpoint of science of unitary
human beings, the person is a unified whole and seen as being greater than and different
from the sum of the parts.? (Delaune 2006) These assumptions give basis that every
individual has different aspects maybe different from others that could affect human
activity such as raising academic performance.
EDUCATOR?S THEORY
SOME SUGGESTION FOR IMPROVING YOUR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
?Every year many capable undergraduate students fail to attain their academic
goals. Some of these students are unsuccessful in their attempts to enter graduate or
professional schools. Others fail to achieve sufficient grades to remain in their
undergraduate program. The majority of these students have at least one thing in
common-they did not acquire proper work strategies in their first two university years. I
urge you to read this handout. A disadvantage to the "last minute" technique is that you
leave yourself no time to clarify confusing points in the lecture or text material. So, if you
hear students brag about having aced exams without working, pity them. A good number
of such students end up wandering through the halls of graduate, law or medical schools
muttering, "Why am I flunking out? I?ve started to work hard." Hard? Maybe.
Efficiently? No. Many other students appreciate the soundness of the aforementioned
plan but are unable to follow it for more than a few weeks. As they fall behind in their
Differential Study on the Academic Performance of UB Nursing Students
work they become increasingly frustrated, tired and anxious. Inevitably, their
concentration begins to wane and their performance declines. What steps can such people
take to increase their chances of sticking to the plan? Here are a few ideas that I have
found useful.
1) It is quite likely that you will feel fresh during the months of July, August and
September. If it is at all possible, try and find out then what text books will be used in
your upcoming courses. With a little effort, you should be able to buy and read part of
these books before classes start. Many people find course material more interesting
when they are not reading it under pressure.
2)Staying fresh is vital. You can?t concentrate well if you are anxious or tired. One way
to reduce anxiety and increase stamina is to exercise regularly. If you can?t or won?t
exercise, you must eat and sleep well. One way to increase the quality of your sleep is
to stop working 45 minutes before you go to bed. Just relax at this time. Some people
find that they feel tired after eating supper. If you are one of these people, consider
resting for a half hour after supper. If you work on a project when you are tired or
may become frustrated with it. If this happens, you may start to dread having to return
to it in the future. I find I need a 20 minute break after 90 minutes of work. If I can, I
lie down and close my eyes. It?s important to not think about your work during your
breaks. It's also important to not "binge work" (i.e., work five, six or more hours
without a real break). It often takes one to three days to recover from such efforts.
3) Adopt the attitude that school is a job. Plan on working eight hours a day. If you adopt
this attitude from day one, You won?t start to view classes and study sessions as
Differential Study on the Academic Performance of UB Nursing Students
infringements on your free time. Try to remind yourself that law, medical and
graduate students work 60-90 hours per week. It is also helpful to consider that
people who join corporations (often as an alternative to attending university)are often
expected to put in five hours of night or weekend work each week.
4) After you've reviewed that day's lecture notes (or that week's text readings) write out
any points that you find confusing. Remember that difficulties will often arise simply
because you have forgotten terms or concepts that you covered in your introductory
course. Keep your introductory text handy. It?s amazing how much information you
can glean from a second reading of this book. If your introductory text does not help
you with your problem check the library for a book that covers the same material as
your text. If this does not help you be sure to ask your professor.
5) If you miss a class, borrow notes from two people, not one person. Also, seek out tow
people who are skilled at note taking. Clearly, if one person has recorded something
that is not meaningful to you, the other person?s notes may help.
6) Get to know your classmates. If you can discuss course material with someone who is
at your level of sophistication you?ll gain a richer understanding of the field. Your
classmates may also be able to help you clarify certain concerns you may have
regarding the course requirements.
7) Generate a list of everything you have to remember to do. Carry it with you at all
times. Update it regularly. Make up work schedules also. Note that it is important to
allow yourself twice as much time as you think you?ll need to complete assignments
Differential Study on the Academic Performance of UB Nursing Students
and prepare for exams. Why? Students rarely plan on (a) getting sick, (b) having
friends or relatives request their time to help with crises, (c) being unable to find
resource material at a moment?s notice, (d) neighbours having loud parties at in
opportune times, etc. Moreover, if you follow my advice you?ll avoid falling into this
cycle: having one of the aformentioned events interfere with your work, blaming
external factors for your poor performance, deciding that your efforts are always in
vain, or giving up.
8) Exams-pretend that you are the professor for a particular course and that you have to
generate fair questions that cover the important lecture and text information. If you
take the time to do this you?ll be surprised at how easy it is to anticipate exam
questions. When writing the exam remember to read the questions through 3 or 4
times. Write so as not to be misunderstood. Remember that examples cannot
substitute for definitions or explanations.
9) Papers-Have your papers written at least two weeks before they are due. Then hide
them for five or six days. Then re-read them with a very critical eye. I guarantee that
you won?t like what you see. Fortunately, you?ll have time to write more drafts. If
you do not know how to write, purchase and read, "Elements of Style", by Strunk and
White or something similar.
10) Go to computing services and ask someone for information on work processinghandbooks,
courses, etc. making changes to papers is no trouble at all if you put your
papers on a computer. Computer basics are very easy to learn.? (Wright 1989)

CONCLUSION
After the study analysis and interpretation, researchers concluded that there were a
greater number of female nursing students who are academically better than the male nursing
students. In terms of year level in the course of Bachelor of Science in Nursing in University of
Bohol, 4th year students are more intelligent than the lower levels. It was also found out that there
was a greater number of good academic performer in fourth year than the other level, maybe
because the low performers are already been expelled. Researchers also concluded that most of
those who live in a boarding house and those who stay with in one kilometer away from school
are better academic performers than the others. Academic performance of nursing students was
not affected by having or not having a boyfriend or girlfriend. Majority of those who had
allowance of 750-1000 pesos a week were good academic performers. Academic performances
were correlated with academic performances and were found out that many of those who studied
just before the exam or the night before the exam and those who study everyday were better
academic performer than the others were. Those who have 1-3 hours of study were also found out
that they are better academic performer than the others. Those who study from 9-12 pm were also
better academic performer than others. Many nursing students perceived that the term exams were
difficult and many said that the minor subjects are easy.
Alternate hypothesis has been proven. There is significant difference between the
academic performances of male nursing students to female one. There is a relationship
between the profiles of nursing students to their academic performance. There is a
relationship between the study habits of nursing students to their academic performance.
There is a variety of impact between the personal perception of nursing students to the
administration, instructors, and subjects taken.

RECOMMENDATIONS
What steps can nursing students take to increase their chances of being an
excellent academic performer? Here are a few ideas that we have found useful.
Try to relocate yourself near to school so that stress on distance will be
minimized.
Have your stomach full every time you are in school. Increase your
allowance but don?t make it too much.
If you are employed, concentrate more on your study.
Make a study habit. Make it to be regular. Best for it is to study every before
exam and everyday, every 9-12 pm and for 1-3 hours.
Read your books. Collect a foundation of questions and answers about
nursing.

GLOSSARY
Academic performance ? grade obtain by respondents in response to their study in the
course of nursing.
Average academic performer--respondents who have a midterm average of 2.0 -2.5 in the
nursing and minor subjects in UB
Convenience sampling (sometimes known as grab or opportunity sampling) is a type of
non-probability sampling which involves the sample being drawn from that
part of the population which is close to hand.
Frequency- is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit
Good academic performer-respondents who have a midterm average of 1.0-2.0 in the
nursing and minor subjects in UB
Low academic performer-respondents who have a midterm average of 2.5 and above in
the nursing and minor subjects in UB
Mean score- total score in a category divided by total possible weight
Percentage - is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100 (per cent meaning "per
hundred"). It is often denoted using the percent sign, "%". Percentages are
used to express how large/small one quantity is, relative to another quantity.
Personal perception - an analysis of an experiment about people "learning" to see certain
objects in a certain way and how perception is an individual thing for
everyone. Study habits ? students apply these habits to all of their classes in
order to be successful, because successful students have good study habits.
Profile - may refer to: a person?s personal feelings thoughts and or characteristics. the
person who he is.
Quota sampling- the population is first segmented into mutually exclusive sub-groups,
just as in stratified sampling. Then judgment is used to select the subjects or
units from each segment based on a specified proportion
